Suffolk is a stretch of hills beyond Essex, far out in the Albion countryside, to which the party flees after the rescue with Oliver Cromwell and his son in the Gloriana chronicle (1660).
Refuge
There they receive, as a reward, treasures and the hills themselves: the three chests that Oliver Cromwell had hidden at Mildenhall. The region has horses, flint houses and the Mildenhall stables, and across the river Newmarket, with a large racecourse.
One of the party, a fallen companion, is buried there; locally the place is called “the tomb of the unknown child”.
They do not repeat the earlier flight of burst horses across country. This time they take a longer route on a flat-bottomed barge through canals and streams, to avoid being tracked. Richard Cromwell flees with them.
