The King of the Beggars is the undeclared sovereign of the Cour des Miracles, a parallel kingdom that official Paris never fully subdued.

Power
His name did not circulate outside the alleys that belonged to him. His power was measured in loyalties, in the silence that fell when his title was mentioned, and in his ability to make people disappear or appear faster than the royal guard could match.
Cartouche
Cartouche was the link between the King and the outside world: an intermediary who carried requests and brought answers without the sovereign showing his face. In the fractured Paris of the Fronde, such mediation carried a high price and an even higher usefulness.
