Layout
- Ground level: the Hall of the Great King at the heart; around it the ministries (Architecture, the Treasury and Royal Chamber, the Chancery) and the barracks of the palace guard.
- Second level: the Feast Hall and the Audience Chamber, with offices of the palace staff.
- Third level: the royal residences, the sovereign’s chamber, the private pavilions.
- Fourth level: the vaults of the royal tithe, where the crown keeps what it does not show.
Under the joint rule of Theodora and Zoe, the palace is both the seat of the last elegance of the Eastern Roman Empire and a labyrinth that visitors caught in the loop learn floor by floor.
