The Children of Savonarola — “the weepers” — are the hysterical followers, children and tearful people, whom Savonarola gathered in Florence in 1494; they went house by house making people give up their goods to feed the bonfire of the vanities.

History
They were not an audience but a method: children’s devotion applied to emptying their parents’ homes. On the night of the attack, before the violence began, the monk closed his eyes and sent them home — which betrayed that he knew what was coming: “I think you knew the moment you sent the children away.” After the attack, in the panicked city, the children were gone; those who had made Florence weep now wept, their echoes running through very empty streets.
