In Antiterra
Description
The first grimoire, written by the mad Arab Al Azred, in ten sections studied one at a time. Its power reaches universal and multiversal destruction. It is large (“this big”) yet handled by one person.
The sections
It explains what the world is made of and what preceded the gods, then gives the spells.
- First: the origin of the “ergonomic” (an obscure term, copied as heard).
- Second: the deserts of Earth and of Antiterra, the gates of the Moon, mortals, and the building of Earth and Antiterra.
- Third: the ancient myths before the coming of the normal gods, the Elder Mythos.
- Fifth: “the largest and most formidable”, “a section of secrets”: unheard-of powers, dangerous to the human mind and to any mind.
- Sixth: “very dense” pure magic, spells found nowhere else, “and enhanced besides”.
- Seventh: attributed to the universe’s first vampire, called by some the Rat King: necromancy, surgery, some alchemy, the supplanting of mind and soul, and the creation and destruction of souls: mystical alchemy.
Commentators
It also travels as a tradition of secrets: “a way of the whisper”, and ancient commentators or keepers of secrets. One of them is named either Tarbafum or Trunells.
Custody
Only one copy is known, and its holder is always known: the Atlanteans before their fall (it is associated with the magic of Atlantis), Count Dracul and Morgana the Fairy. At one point “the Arab” holds it; at another a company receives it by deliberate delivery (“the Necronomicon that we handed over”), to help in the conquest of platforms. Krisina handles and studies it in the world of dreams.
Use
Normal use is selection, not full reading: “under supervision”, some spells are chosen to fight demons and a devil. Taking it to the abyss was discussed and judged a bad option.
Open questions
- What the fourth, eighth, ninth and tenth sections contain.
- Whether the commentary is bound with the book, and how the whisper works.
- Who exercises the supervision, and what “only Versus Demon allowed it” means.
- Whether other copies exist.
- What the “platforms” are, and who the “we” who delivered it are.
In Terra
A hidden, powerful book of great esoteric importance, written in Latin. Known copies:
- a 17th-century edition in the library of the University of Buenos Aires, once lent to Jorge Luis Borges and returned;
- another 17th-century edition in the Harvard library;
- a copy at Arkham University.
The same records state that the last copy is in Buenos Aires; the contradiction stands. Many factions seek it. A sect hostile to the organization pursued it, and in some conflict the book was lost.
