The Marshall Inevitable is an entity of high rank in the hierarchy of the Inevitables. Its function is to carry out the reabsorption and reprogramming of Inevitables that have deviated from their original mission. It appears as a dimensional materialization (a Gate portal) when Draga Machine completes her mission of eliminating Apis in Uchronic Belgrade.
Nature
It is described vaguely as “ready to drag Draga away to reprogram her.” It is an impersonal, inexorable force of cosmic law: it offers no alternatives and does not negotiate, and its appearance is an automatic, obligatory summons.
Encounter with Swan
When the Marshall appears to reabsorb Draga, Swan fires at point-blank range and casts a reincarnation spell. The Marshall remains implacable. Swan and Draga disappear together in the whirlwind of the Gate. This suggests the Marshall was not “defeated” and that Swan’s action precipitated a dimensional disappearance.
Open questions
- Whether Swan was captured, or fled with Draga to the plane of the Inevitables, is not settled.
