This name refers to different figures in 2 worlds; the versions are not merged.
Leviathan is, in Antiterra, a colossal astral whale covered in eyes that serves as both vehicle and door; in Vala, a single devouring jailer that surfaces at the end of the world in the Strait of Magellan and can only be destroyed, or escaped, from inside.

Antiterra
Name
It is named in the singular with an article, the Leviathan, and also “the whale of Jacob” (Jacob’s Whale). Sources waver even on gender: some say el Leviatán, others “the whale”, “they can manifest her”. It is said to have been “on the shores of chaos”, and its age is counted from there.
Description
A whale of colossal scale, “a lot bigger than Vegemoth”. It is “bathed in eyes on top”: its whole body is covered in them. Its teeth “look like a kind of fine saws, like microfilaments, that could pierce anything”. It has a mouth and a tail, which act as two different doors with different consequences.
Its position is unstable: “at times it also seems to shift from its place”, because the astral winds can manifest it in different places.
Powers and abilities
- It is carried or manifested by the astral winds, and also moves at will by a form of thought travel that some astral creatures have.
- It can open a special dimensional door of its own, through which it brings its travelers where no other way enters.
- Its protection depends on the point of entry. A traveler inside was warned: “I can’t protect you from the tail, you should have come in through the mouth.” Some astral routes pass through it, and some places can only be entered by its door.
Role
It is a unique creature of great cosmological power, not common fauna. The records give it a “territory of Leviathan”, a zone of its own whose limits and access are not specified. It is associated with Astra and with the first and second circles, and can approach.
It forms a pair with Vegemoth, which “is more hippopotamic”: the beast of water and the astral against the beast of land, opposed in build and scale.
Open questions
- Whether the traveler’s entry by the tail was an error or the only route available is not stated.
- Where the territory of Leviathan lies and what it contains (a region of the astral, a body of water, or the beast’s own extent) is unknown.
- How many eyes it has and its true scale are not recorded beyond “colossal” and “bigger than Vegemoth”.
- How it is summoned or boarded, and what the passage costs, is not recorded.
- What binds it to Jacob, and what relation of origin or rank it has with Vegemoth, is unknown.
- The world’s own names for its travel faculties have not been given.
Vala
Description
There is only one. No one owns, breeds or controls it. It roams the seas with its guardians, the Krakens. It appears only at the end of the world (“they are at the end of the world, after all. Not just anywhere”): in the Strait of Magellan, in the southern waters of South America, in 1946, with Ushuaia as the last port, about three thousand feet from the coast. From the beach it is compared to a kraken; seen properly it is “a giant skull, poltergeist. Immense. And it’s gargantuan”, a horrid mass among the waves.
Marine life around it is ruined: algae, whales and “the Krul” are “necrotically rotten”. Wherever it settles, the perimeter degrades.
The cell
It is called the jailer and works as a complete prison:
- The entrance is a portal, a point of no return: when crossed, “reality closes behind them”.
- Inside, it “works like a kind of gigantic wall of force” that constricts and disintegrates, and it eats “with its juices, with its disintegrating force power”. It strikes with pure force and necrotic rot at once.
- The walls are the wall of force, the outer guard the Krakens, the perimeter the necrotic sea.
Its single rule: “you only destroy it when you are inside. Only when they are inside can they escape.” Escaping and killing it are the same operation, and neither can be done from outside.
History
It has devoured and destroyed worlds and “has devoured entire cities”, holding them before devouring them; it erases whole units of reality rather than individuals.
The tradition that gives it its name, the Book of Job, sets the scale: “for Leviathan the weapons of war are fluff. The mace tickles it.” Only God played with it, six hours a day, to calm it. No one else has ever calmed it.
Open questions
- A voice speaks of a “terrible jailer that roams the seas with its Krakens” without naming it Leviathan; that they are the same is probable, not established.
- It is also recorded as a threat in the labyrinth of the fourth level, where it can “bite a piece off” a traveler; whether that labyrinth is its interior, another place where it appears, or what lies beyond the portal is unresolved.
- Where the portal is and how it is found is unknown.
- What must be done to destroy it from inside, what to strike and how much it withstands, is not stated.
- What the interior looks like, and what remains of the devoured worlds, is unknown.
- Its origin, who placed it there and whether anyone directs it are unknown.
