The Storm Riders are three armored riders on ghostly horses who travel the storm corridors of the high-latitude ocean, using lightning as their road and warning ships rather than plundering them. Whether they are an order or a phalanx is unknown.

Description

Full armor; horses with manes dissolved in electric charge, luminous eyes and hooves broken from air. Their lances are lightning, and the hooves do not strike the ocean but ignite it. They appear where major squalls break and vanish when the sky calms. Their function: lightning as medium, warning as office, the storm as threshold between worlds.

Language and selection

Their language is the Storm Winds, cited in the archive of the Revol Ship: “they bring new mysteries, they bring new worlds.” A traveler who hears and understands is allowed passage; one who hears and does not understand is left adrift. This is selection by listening, neither reward nor punishment.

Conflicting accounts

  • Some archives take the name as the self-designation of the traveling group, the Deep Ones, whose crossing recorded them.
  • Others take them as an external faction the group became linked with aboard the Revol Ship.
  • The archivist of the Plata leans toward the second reading; the assertoric archive toward the first.
