Ganibal is an Ethiopian (Moorish) spy in the service of Peter the Great and an apparent ally of Les Libertateurs. Steve Reyes meets him during his imprisonment in the Bastille. Ganibal intervenes with a royal veto in the torture and sits down, and loses, at the Host Poker.

Historical echo
The archive notes that Abraham Hannibal/Ganibal is a real figure, an Ethiopian brought to Russia as Peter I’s protégé and great-grandfather of Pushkin.
The double face
The ally proves to be the antagonist. Ganibal is not two characters but one with a double face. The Moor of Peter the Great is the Dark Star of the Enlightenment, the “black sun” (sol níger) of reason and engineer of Diderot’s circle, and therefore also the Great Caller, who steals the host on Mount Nevermind. He is an ally at court and a thief of the offering in the shadows. The phonetic link between Caníbal (“cannibal”) and Gannibal is confirmed as identity.
