The Underground Forums of Rome are a wide cavity beneath the republican Forum, attested in the 3rd century A.D. during the escape of GRDT and KAXA.
Description
- Half-buried columns recall the original architecture.
- A low stone altar bears offerings to chthonic deities.
- Seepage water collects in a central well.
- GRDT and KAXA cross a stone bridge over the flooded cavity at the moment of their escape, torch lit. They flee the emperor Aurelian; their exit leads to the Pons Sublicius.
