The Underground Stables of the Temple (also the Impossible Stables) are a vast vaulted hall beneath the Temple, dating from the 12th to 14th centuries and still accessible after the Dissolution. The Temple’s visible stable housed two hundred horses; the invisible one housed ten times as many.
The hall has stone pillars at regular intervals, boxes with white and bay horses on both sides of a central aisle, stacked straw bales and torches. Two Templars in white cloaks with red crosses walk down the middle. The perspective is impossible: the hall extends beyond what the Temple’s subsoil should allow.
