Doubling of Hugues de Payens is the revelation that Hugo is in some way more than one person. He speaks of himself in the third person, hints at multiple lives or personalities, and denies wearing the black armor, although the group saw it in the crypt after the theft of the relics.
Possible readings
- Hugo wears the black armor by day (the lawful, white persona) and at night turns into a demonic version (the black persona).
- He is a single consciousness that has lived “double lives”.
Precedent
During the crossing to Tyre, the Faun in Hespérides said Hugo had “lived several lives, forgot earlier lives, and is now twice as long-lived”.
