Description
A Ranger “exceeding his functions”: beard, epaulettes, two Bowie knives used as extensions of his arms, and the arbitrary power of the man in charge of the line — “I am the authority: if I want, you pass, and if I want, you don’t.” The desert druid had warned about him. On the bridge he claimed the rescued children.
Nature
When he charges, his face deforms into a snout and he mutates into a werewolf, an infernal coyote: an outsider of the lineage of the hellhounds of Nessus, a damned coyote who belches fire — the burning vomit that killed the group’s horses — and fights with unnatural speed. The Deep Ones recognized him as the same lineage of creatures they had faced “on the day of Miguelito”.
Death
The squad wore him down and Ariel finished him, beheading him in a western duel, moving his horse into the sunlight. The head kept the shape of a jackal; the group took it as a trophy. In the same border scene, the priest called Erzebeth a “cursed witch” seconds before a shotgun blast.
