The Bibliotheca Aby Warburgo is the extradimensional library of Aby Warburgo, where he works among his Pathosformel plates — not a building but a faculty made place, whose catalogue is his own mind.

Properties

  • A book brought from the past, dated 1155, tore a hole in the dimensional pocket carrying it and, instead of being lost, fell straight into the library, already catalogued. Cataloguing is automatic and mental.
  • Dangerous or important objects transfer themselves to its shelves.
  • It is multi-temporal: “suddenly the library is in different times, in different places”.
  • It echoes greater libraries — the Bodleian, the National Library, the British Museum — as if it “hid behind other libraries so as not to be located”. Being unlocatable, it cannot be plundered.

Relationships

It is related to the library of the historian Aby Warburg, founded in Hamburg and moved to London: what in that scholar was an obsession with cataloguing images is, in the monk-archaeologist of Uchronic Paris, a literal, magical and wandering capacity.
