The Seals of Solomon are engraved wards, attributed to Solomon, second King of Israel, that close doors, books and chambers. They are found only “in places where there might be something to seal”.

Description

The sign is an engraved pentagram, visible “to the naked eye”. Unlike any other pentacle, “of course they have eyes”.

They have been found on a door leaf, on the cover of a book that is itself an object of power, and guarding the separation between the world and an imprisoned demonic force. Loose examples, “engraved on small stone”, have turned up with maps.

Nature

Each seal joins an engraved sign (where), a physical threshold (door, cover, chamber) and an authorized date (when the ward may lift): “this must be opened on the day of the resurrection of Christ”.

The ward on the sealed book “activates when broken”; no one opens it, fearing it would disintegrate whoever tried.

Knowledge of the Seals is remembered by contact: at the Ivory Gates, laying a hand on the surface makes one remember it.

History

Behind one seal lies “a magnet of evil”: the imprisoned Minotaur, which a company declared it meant to destroy. The recorded conflict, argued in theological terms, was whether to wait for the day of the resurrection or act sooner. A deadline is mentioned: “these six days are going to be hard”, counted by nights (“night one was an attack”, “night four”).

Distinctions

  • The four-degree cross with which Hugues de Payens authenticates his letters is not a Seal of Solomon.
  • The Seventh Seal is an element of the Apocalypse’s series of seven, named with the archangel Metatron (associated with its opening) and with Gabriel. The Exterminating Angel is mentioned with it in connection with the murder of Amon.

Conflicting accounts

  • The six days may be the wait until the opening or the length of a trial.

Open questions

  • What the pentagram’s eyes see or watch is unknown.
  • What the portable stone seals do (open, mark, authenticate?) is unknown.
  • Size, color, material and condition of every example are not recorded; nor how many Seals exist, or who registers them.
  • Whether the Exterminator and the Seventh Seal are one power or two is unresolved.
  • Whether Solomon’s wards and the Seventh Seal are one system or two things sharing a name is not established.
