Aunt Nancy is not a person but a title: the name of a madam in Gary, “a legendary character who does not exist” and therefore cannot be killed. The current holder is “a Black madam called Aunt Nancy”, regia con un T (“regal with a T”), heir to a line of madams reaching back to New Orleans.

Lineage
“Nancy is a madam of New Orleans”: the title was born there and travelled with its people to Gary. The authority is occupied, not inherited by blood. “Nancy’s people” reached the region before Rachel Betta. A common local question is “Do you work for Nancy?”
Brothel, tribunal, altar
- The brothel gathers the money.
- The region’s gangs bring her their disputes and abide by her rulings; whoever operates in Gary does so with Nancy or against her.
- “These worshippers of Nancy” are congregation and faction at once. The cult works at night with ritual orchids, is “quite violent”, and holds captives from within: “It was voodoo. Because he was sort of dominated.”
The sentence
Each prisoner has a finger cut off, different for each person, and sewn onto the forehead. Three cases are recorded: a thumb, a middle finger and an index finger.
The stated justification: “she wanted to repay with interest the suffering the Black race had suffered at the hands of whites.”
Territory
“Nancy’s caves” are named but not described. A French city, Nancy, is reachable from Metz; no record links it to the madam.
Open questions
- How the next holder is chosen, how many there have been, who holds the name now; her appearance and house.
- The rule for assigning each finger.
- What regia con un T means, and how the name Abramovich, mentioned once, connects.
- Whether voodoo is the institution’s tool or its religion; whether the worshippers worship Nancy or she is priestess of something else.
- Her relationship with Rachel Betta beyond the order of arrival.
