Mercane 001 — possibly named Cornelio — is a merchant of the Mercane race, blue-skinned giant traders between planes, marked on the forearm with the number 001: the sign of an open account.

Description
Tall, sapphire-skinned, with intelligent unblinking eyes; an expensive merchant’s tunic without ostentatious ornament. A leather-bound ledger in his left hand, an abacus of dark beads in his right; 001 tattooed on his right forearm. Behind him, his portable stall: sealed scrolls, cosmological flasks, coins of uncertain origin, optical instruments, an iridescent veil of planar cloth. He might set up at the Bazaar of San Dragón. He appears where a transaction requires it, never out of habit.
The open account
The number is not an administrative ID: he has borne it since a greater creditor imposed on him a debt that he has not yet finished collecting from whoever owes it. His patience “is not virtue. It is accounting”: every gesture is calibrated toward an act to come.
Open questions
- Whether Cornelio is his name.
- What act the account awaits, and whether it will close.
