The Fountain of the Innocents is the last Renaissance fountain in Paris, a fountain of wishes and sacrifice: every wish granted costs a drowned innocent girl. A rusalka dwells in its waters.
| Type | Fountain |
| Location | Les Halles, Paris |
| Era | 1715–1717 A.D.A. |
| Spanish entry | Fuente de los Inocentes |
Description
It stands in the meat-market quarter of Les Halles, with a frontispiece of Hercules and Nike, a step from the street where Ravaillac stabbed Henry IV. Golem-statues, the “defenders of time”, guard it; in the chronicle they rise to defend the city from the dragons.
The rusalka, queen of the water nymphs, lives in its waters; her serpent-hair holds three warriors suspended, and she demands the Host promised to her.
History
On a spring Sunday, the paladin Gideon died there, hanging from the rusalka’s black hair in front of the fountain, and Mishumarot reappeared as envoy of Queen Eve to collect the Host, closing the group’s founding mission.
