Fiesole is the range of high hills overlooking Florence, the edge where the city stops giving orders. With its excellent view, it stands in for the dark forest at the opening of the Divine Comedy.
Description
- “A witch from the outskirts of Fiesole” comes from these hills: the infiltrator among the servants of the Cerchi.
- The shady forest that Dante marks on the map starts here. It runs toward the Valle Leumbroso, forty or fifty kilometers across the Arno, toward the Apennines and Prato Magno.
- Past the hills lies a village of woodcutters at the foot of a mineral-rich zone, the one that stopped sending logs down the river.
- The lead that the popolo minuto gives the group starts here.
