Bartok is described only as “of the Banat”; its entry records the region’s history.

  • 17th century: Habsburg conquest.
  • 1716: independent Habsburg province (Treaty of Passarowitz) under civil administration, until 1778. Count Claudius Mercy, governor from 1720, drained marshes, built roads and canals, and attracted German artisans.
  • Maria Theresa I (1717–1780): repopulation by German peasants (“Danube Swabians”), new villages, mineral exploitation.
  • 18th–19th centuries: small emigration from France into the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at Habsburg invitation. Some, from Lorraine and French-speaking Switzerland (Valais), kept French and an identity as Français du Banat for generations.
  • 1779: the Banat passes to the Kingdom of Hungary.
  • 1788: eight villages of French colonists.
  • 1918: Banat Republic proclaimed at Timişoara and recognized by Hungary; Serbian troops ended it a few days later.
